About
dARSW
disAbility Resources of
Southwest Washington is a Center
for Independent Living as established through the Rehab Act of 1973.
Independent Living Centers are a nationwide network of non-profit
organizations run by persons with disabilities, promoting the civil
rights of persons with disabilities. Through a combination of
individualized services, resource referral and advocacy efforts, our
program assists people to maximize independence and integration into
all aspects of life.
In October of 2002, dARSW spun off of Independent Living
Resources in
Portland, Oregon to form a separate Independent Living Center, focusing
on the specific needs in the southwest region of Washington. The
service area includes, Clark, Cowlitz, Skamania, and Wahkiakum Counties.
dARSW is a 501(c) 3, funded in part by federal and local grants,
private foundations, fundraising activities and contributions from
interested individuals. We depend on gifts, bequests, memorials and
endowments from people in the communities we serve for our continued
operation. All donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.
About
Independent Living
What is an Independent Living Center?
Independent Living Centers are typically non-residential, private,
non-profit, consumer-controlled, community-based organizations
providing services and advocacy by and for persons with all types of
disabilities. Their goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to
achieve their maximum potential within their families and communities.
Also, Independent Living Centers serve as a strong
advocacy voice on a wide range of national, state and local issues.
They work to assure physical and programmatic access to housing,
employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities, and
health and social services. These are just a few of the services
offered.
